Digital Image Basics for non-Photographers • Blaise Tobia
Submit 20 digital examples each of personal creative work and student work (Mac compatible).
No guidance whatever, except “Mac compatible.” Currently, most stored file formats are cross-platform compatible anyway.
.
The portfolio should include 20 images of the applicant's recent work and 20 images
of recent student work (no larger than 1600 pixels on longest dimension, in JPEG format).
Not bad. Simple, non contradictory.
.
5 images to be submitted on a CD with the following stipulations:
Image size: 1240 pixels x 1240 pixels maximum, 300 dpi resolution;
File size: no larger than 2.0 MB (total); image format: JPG or JPEG only.
300 dpi (ppi) resolution requirement is unnecessary. JPG and JPEG are same file format.
File size requirement doesn’t specify stored or open. A 1240x1240 RGB-8 file has 4.4 MB pixel dimensions
so perhaps they mean stored file size.
.
Images from a DSLR of at least 6 Megapixels. JPGs saved at highest quality (Photoshop: 10 or above).
RGB files, not GS or CMYK.
Uncompressed file sizes of more than 24 MB. That is, make your JPG file from an 8-bit TIFF file that is at least 24 MB.
Very detailed, but confuses stored and open file sizes.
.
All images must be submitted in JPEG format (file name extension .jpg) and RGB color mode.
We recommend uploading files that are 72 pixels-per-inch (ppi) because a higher resolution
does not add clarity when viewing images on a computer screen.
Admirable in tems of specificity and correct use of "ppi" (rather than "dpi"). But, there is no specification of minimum/maximum file sizes.
Also, it's not the print resolution setting (i.e. 72 ppi or 300 ppi) that determines the overall clarity; it's pixel dimensions.
.
Image size: The image sizes below are recommendations. Your image sizes may be different.
Landscape orientation:
- recommended maximum size: 530x780 pixels (7.36x10.83 inches)
- recommended minimum size: 480x480 pixels (6.67x6.67 inches)
Portrait Orientation
- recommended maximum size: 780x530 pixels (10.83x7.36 inches)
- recommended minimum size: 480x480 pixels (6.67x6.67 inches)
Maximum file size: 3.0 MB per image. (Your image files will likely be considerably smaller than 3.0 MB.)
Admirably detailed, but specific aspect ratios are somewhat arbitrary. Square maximum specifications are better.
Stating a maximum file size of 3.0 MB is unnecessary because the maximum file size
for the maximum pixel dimensions allowed would be only 1.18 MB.
(Note that this are rather small pixel dimensions and won't provide a lot of visual detail.)
.
Digital Image Requirements: Digital images can be submitted via e-mail with the complete submission form.
Images should be formatted to 72 dpi, no larger than 600x450 pixels and no smaller than 300x225 pixels.
Images should be submitted in JPG (at high quality) or TIFF format.
File sizes must be less than 200 KB per image. Images must be in natural color.
600x450 RGB-8 file resolution is 845 KB.
So 200 KB maximum must refer to stored file size; this pretty much rules out the TIFF option.
"Natural Color" is a very arbitrary term in digital imaging.
.
Since your images may be used in an Exhibition Catalog, we need to have high quality JPG images.
The resolution of the images should be 150 DPI minimum; 300 DPI maximum.
Images need to be of reasonable size (under 2 MB is good).
Images should be between 1400 pixels at the shortest and 2000 pixels at the longest dimension.
1920x1920 pixel images are also acceptable.
1920x1920 RGB-8 image resolution is 10.5 MB. Image would print well up to 6.5x6.5 inches.
JPEG Q11 would work to get below 2 MB stored file size.
(What does “reasonable size” mean? - in any case, it's unnecessary given the secified pixel dimensions.)
Because they specify pixel dimensions, they don't need to specify print resolution - which can be set by them.
.
Up to eighteen digital images on a CD or DVD. Each image should be in JPEG or TIF format,
and no more than 3 megabytes in file size. To ensure excellent image quality,
you should use low compression - not less than 300 dpi is recommended.
.
3 MB file size here probably means stored file size, although not clearly specified.
But, the difference in image resolution between a 3 MB stored JPEG and a 3 MB stored TIFF
can be immense (25x or more).
Specifying low compression (meaning, use fairly high JPG quality)
has absolutely nothing to do with specifying adequate image print resolution.
And, specifying adequate print resolution has nothing to do
with specifying adequate image resolution (i.e. pixel dimensions).
.
Portfolio specifications: submit a single PDF file set up as a slide show with maximum 30 images
(candidate’s portfolio, students’ work). Each image file should be no larger than 1 MB.
600x600 pixel RGB-8 image = pixel dimensions of 1 MB. If it means this, this is rather low resolution - not much detail will be available.
But, a 1 MB stored JPEG could have display pixel dimensions up to 16 MB (8x8 300ppi RGB-8).
This could work, but would be overkill since this PDF is meant to be looked at as a slide show and not printed.
